Erwan Castex had a simple goal heading into his third Rone album: keep things collaborative, whether the Parisian producer was bouncing ideas off Bryce Dessner (The National) or booking one-off sessions with such like-minded left-fielders as Toshinori Kondo, Sea Oleena, and Gaspar Claus.
"I really wanted Creatures to be an album less focused on me," he explains. "Strangely enough, I still feel like it's the most intimate."
Intimate and alive, surging through our speakers alongside bit-crushed beats ("Ouija"), multi-tiered synth melodies ("Sing Song"), and a sonic headspace as striking and surreal as the record's hand-drawn sleeve. It's as if the IDM revival finally kicked in and prided itself on pure energy more than patches and plug-ins.
