Be it folk, alt-rock, R&B or hip-hop, 2017 is off to a strong start for new releases. With a slew of expected records this year, singles have started to drop into our laps with albums not far behind.
Vince Staples, Real Estate and Spoon all have encroaching LPs, while we’ve finally received the full releases from Sampha, Kehlani and Japandroids. Meanwhile, newcomers Maggie Rogers, Toothless and Syd have new sounds out as well. Rogers’ EP will be released February 17, but for now, “On + Off” is an electric, sultry jam with an almost R&B-like cadence.
Toothless is the new project of Bombay Bicycle Club’s bassist, Ed Nash. It’s like The Shins meets Bombay, refreshing and satiating during the group's hiatus.
Similar to Nash, Syd isn’t a newcomer in the world of music. The member of Odd Future and The Internet has released her first solo album, Fin, after releasing two singles. The alt-R&B album is seductive and dark in a way that contrasts Kehlani’s bright release, SweetSexySavage, nicely.
Adding further dimension and sonic diversity to ever expanding genres, this playlist of recent releases is sure to cover all listening moods.
