Batshit: A Playlist

Batshit: A Playlist

Fact: Ain’t no shortage of crazy . Crazy exes, crazy bosses, crazy mothers-in-law . . . Well, you get the idea. Fortunately, all that crazy’s served as fodder for some excellent songs about crazy. What the hell was Trent Reznor going on about in “Closer”? Jesus, who knows? But what a song! Should “Institutionalized” — Suicidal Tendencies’ chronicle of how one mother’s refusal to grant her son a Pepsi led directly to his “white shirt with long sleeves” — be taken as a cautionary tale? Obviously. Speaking of moms, why would Glenn Danzig write “Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?,” in which he brings the toes and teeth of his victim to you-know-who as a souvenir? Beats us. But what a song! The point is, crazy isn’t quite so scary when it’s accompanied by a catchy tune. Come to think of it, it can be downright fun . . . in an alarming, slightly stressful way. From Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” to Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” from the Ramones’ “Psycho Therapy” to Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” we went ahead and compiled a playlist of some of the craziest cuts ever composed. Sit back, relax, and brace yourself . . .
